ATLANTA (AP) - Actress Janet Fielding, who generated a science-fiction buff following as Tegan Jovanka, the bossy Australian companion of "Dr. Who," says little girls need sci-fi role models.

Ms. Fielding left the British Broadcasting Corp.'s program more than three years ago, but drew lots of attention this weekend at the seventh annual Dixie Trek science fiction convention, sponsored by the Atlanta Star Trek Society.

In the BBC series, "Dr. Who" is a space and time traveler whose companions usually say only "Yes, Doctor," or "No, Doctor." But Tegan added some bite and feminism to the show, frequently arguing with the doctor.

"Little boys have role models," she said. "Little girls should have intelligent role models on television also."

Also appearing at the convention were several "Star Trek" guests, including Walter "Chekov" Koenig; Mark Lenard, who plays Mr. Spock's father, Sarek; and Robin Curtis, who played Lieutenant Saavik in the last two "Star Trek" movies.
