[edit]

AFTER fighting off political enemies with his foul-mouthed put downs, the new Doctor Who will have to rely on other powers as he battles through time and space to save civilisation.

As the long-running saga of who would take over as the Time Lord came to a dramatic end on live TV last night, Peter Capaldi was unveiled as the sci-fi show's 12th Doctor and will team up with glamorous sidekick Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Capaldi, famous for turning the air blue as PR guru Malcolm Tucker in the political comedy The Thick Of It, joked: "It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer."

The Scottish actor is a lifelong fan of the show and has already appeared in it once in a minor role.

Referring to his former alter-ego, Capaldi said: "I think Malcolm has been banished from the mirror by this Doctor, who would certainly not put up with Malcolm's language."

It was said that only 10 people in the world knew the next Doctor's identity and they used the code word Houdini to guard against leaks. However, bookies had to suspend betting after a flurry of bets for the 55-year-old Glaswegian sent him from 40-1 on Friday to odds-on favourite.

Capaldi, who missed the call breaking the news because his phone was on silent, soared ahead of other actors Ben Daniels and Ben Whishaw.

Previous favourite Rory Kinnear dropped out after revealing he had never seen the show. William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: "It looks as though someone may have let the secret slip within the last week or so."

Many had thought that the new Doctor would be a woman, with Peep Show star Olivia Colman heading the list. But celebrity photographer Rankin tweeted that it would be a man.

After finishing a photo-shoot yesterday, Rankin wrote: "He's going to be an ace Dr."

Current Doctor Matt Smith quit in June. He said: "I pass it on with a smile and I say, 'good luck buddy, you're going to have to work hard'."

Plans for the half-hour unveiling show hosted by Zoe Ball had been kept secret with a repeat of Celebrity Mastermind craftily shown on TV listings.

With its 50th anniversary in the autumn, Doctor Who is the world's longest running sci-fi show, producing almost 800 episodes from 1963. It stopped in 1989 but, after a short-lived revival, returned in 2005.
