Doctor Who actors from past and present might be uniting in a one-off episode to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary, according to the Daily Mirror . The seven surviving actors who have played the Time Lord since the show's debut might be joining Matt Smith in the episode, if series chief Steven Moffat, who is also the creator of Sherlock, is to be believed.
This week he said, "getting the other Doctors involved would be very fitting for thebirthday episode", sparking rumours. The episode, which will be screened in November to mark the anniversary, will be filmed in the spring.
Earlier in the week, the BBC confirmed that Matt Smith will star in the episode, although there is speculation that this will be his last appearance as Who before he 'regenerates' into the Time Lord's 12th incarnation and another actor takes over. Smith commented on the rumour to the Mirror, saying "How amazing would it be to see Tom Baker? Can you imagine seeing him back in the scarf? Paul McGann is a great Doctor - I say bring back Chris Eccleston and Dave Tennant too."
Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston have reportedly been approached about the episode. The first three actors to play the Doctor, William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee, have died, but could be included on screen using a combination of old footage and technology.
The suggestion to bring back the first three doctors was voiced by Sylvester McCoy in 2010 . The actor, who played the seventh Doctor in the late Eighties, said: "It would be fascinating with all the technology if they could bring back Jon Pertwee and William Hartnell. That would be amazing - and I bet they could do it if they wanted to."
McCoy, who appeared in one-off Doctor Who episodes in 1993 and 1996, said he would be "delighted" to join in for an anniversary episode; although noted that "all those egos in the same room would be very difficult to deal with".
