THE year-long search for a star to play the latest big-screen Doctor Who is over. Rutger Hauer, better known for appearing in Guinness TV ads than films, is about to sign to play the eccentric doctor in a £10 million epic.
Film distributors at the recent Mifed film and TV market in Milan, say 6ft 3 in tall, blond Rutger first spotted coolly repeating the words "pure genius" in his commercial - is an unusual, but brilliant choice. They like the Dutch-born actor, who has already played opposite Harrison Ford in Blade Runner, because he is "quirky, sinister, and has a sense of humour."
The new doctor, complete with Tardis, will be essentially different from any of the TV doctors.
"He will be a doctor of the Nineties - a more dangerous and darker doctor," explained producer Peter Litten.
Mystery
"He will be a much more physical doctor who can handle himself and will not resist a fight. He's a mystery and an enigma."
The film will please millions of viewers disappointed when the BBC cancelled the Dr Who series after 27 years.
The film will start in Britain next July, with location shooting throughout Europe.
