WITHIN the past five years or so science fiction has emerged from under its pseudo scientific shell to become one of the most respectable forms of entertainment with a worldwide appeal. Not that it did not have an appeal before the sixties. It did. But space exploits in the past five years have given a twist that has made this hitherto looked-down-upon medium of entertainment into one of the most respectable there is.
At the Palace Theatre next week we are treated to a first-class celluloid interpretation of a science-fiction theme. An established television character Dr. Who now makes his appearance on the wide screen and if the enthusiasm with which he was received the other side of the channel is any indication of the popularity of such a series, then next week's audience at the Palace Theatre will not be disappointed.
PALACE
THE Daleks are coming. Long time favourites with British children we now have an opportunity to see what exactly they are. Dr. Who (Peter Cushing), his two granddaughters Barbara (Jennie Linden) and Susan (Roberta Tovey) and Barbara's boyfriend Ian (Roy Castle) are suddenly ejected from Earth. They discover a futuristic all-metal city, of Daleks. A greedy, war-mongering form of life, the Daleks are shielded by mobile metal cones and armed with flame guns which can temporarily cripple. Dr. Who and his party are taken prisoner. The Daleks aim is to destroy the only other form of life on the planet - the Thals. The Daleks trick Susan into inviting the Thals to collect food in their metal city. The Daleks lie in ambush for the approaching Thals and there is a fierce battle in the monster- infested swamps. The Thals manage to escape and set out, with the help of Dr. Who, to destroy the Daleks for ever.
