Final preparations are taking place for Northern Ireland's first Meccano Exhibition and Inter-Schools Challenge which will be held this Saturday, 1st November, at Enniskillen Library. The event, which runs from 1400am - 5.00pm has been organised in partnership with the Western Education & Library Board and Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum, and is supported by Meccano (UK).
Over 100 spectacular Meccano models will be on display at the exhibition, including several promotional models, which were assembled at the Meccano factory and presented to toy shops who sold the Meccano range.
Many of the unusual mechanical creations and intricate constructions have taken many hours to build and look extremely graceful
Models from Meccano's latest range will also be on display including Spykee, the WI-FI spy robot which moves, sees, hears, speaks, takes pictures and creates videos. Visitors to the exhibition will have a unique opportunity to see some of the oldest conventional Meccano models, right up to the latest robotic technology.
The main event throughout the day will be the Meccano Inter-Schools Challenge which has attracted fifteen teams from local primary and secondary level schools.
Event organisers Ian Wilson and Selwyn Johnston outlined that they have been overwhelmed by interest in this event which will attract visitors from throughout Ireland.
For those visitors to the Meccano exhibition who have difficulty recalling their childhood, they will be able to travel back in time, courtesy of Dr Who's Tardis which is making a star appearance. Dr Who fans will also have an opportunity to have their photograph professionally taken beside the worlds most famous Police Box.
Outside the Library visitors will be amazed by another attraction which has not been seen on the streets of Enniskillen for many years. A Garrett Showmans Steam Tractor, which inspired the Meccano Showmans model, will be in full steam.
The engine called 'Maeve' was built in 1918 and is presently owned by Finn Lynch from Dundalk. Finn outlined that he is really looking forward to visiting Enniskillen on the 1st November and hopes to be able to drive the engine through the town centre.
