EDDIE Izzard is to be the new Dr Who, ex-Time Lord Tom Baker said yesterday

Baker named the cross-dressing comic, who was born in South Yemen but reared and educated in Co Down, as the star of the revived series which is to return to BBC screens in 2005.

He claimed that Izzard - whose family lived at Bangor's Ashford Drive and whose father John worked for BP in Belfast had landed the part when the former 1974-1981 Dr Who was interviewed yesterday morning on BBC Radio Five Live.

Baker told presenter Julian Worricker that Izzard, who is to perform in Belfast on December 2, would make an excellent Dr Who when the sci-fi adventures return for a new series, scripted by Queer As Folk creator Russell T Davies.

Baker said of Izzard: "He has an alien quality. Eddie Izzard is so mysterious and strange. He seems like he has lots of secrets.

"You always feel Eddie Izzard knows something you don't, or has been somewhere you haven't been.

"I like the way he dresses. He could probably do his own wardrobe."

However, a BBC spokeswoman yesterday described Baker's comments as "speculation" and said that no final decision had been made.

Richard E Grant and Alan Davies, star of Jonathan Creek, have been named as the bookies' favourites for the coveted part.
