Rush to buy a Cyberman suit
LOYAL Doctor Who and Torchwood fanatics played out their own intergalactic battle yesterday as they bid against each other to buy props from the hit television series.
The science fiction followers lived up to their reputation as some of television's most loyal fans by shelling out thousands of £to get their hands on some unique items.
Under the hammer were costumes worn in the award-winning BBC Wales shows by David Tennant, John Barrowman, Kylie Minogue and Catherine Tate, as well as a futuristic 4x4 straight from the set of Torchwood, which sold for £18,000 at the auction at Bonham's in Knightsbridge.
The Range Rover had been stored near the show's set in Cardiff for any prospective buyers to have a look at before deciding to place a bid, although it is not known if the winning bidder has ever seen the car up close.
The 4x4 - which was John Barrowman's vehicle of choice in the show and came complete with tinted windows and a futuristic body kit - still failed to outsell some of the less practical lots.
Two full-size fibreglass Daleks - built for the Remembrance of the Daleks episode in 1988 - made more than £35,000 at the auction.
A black Mk1 Imperial Dalek sold for £20,400 and a white Mk 2 Dalek went for £15,600.
The waitress costume made famous by Kylie when she played Astrid Peth in 2007 was among the most sought-after lots. The short black dress, matching bloomers and knee-high boots reached £3,120.
Tennant's iconic Doctor Who suit, made by fashion designer Paul Smith, sold for £5,040.
Cybermen costumes were among the most popular items in the 160-lot sale. The 6ft-tall silver outfits included fibreglass helmets and featured in Doctor Who episodes from the late 1980s.
Three Cyberman suits sold for £4,080, £8,400 and £9,600. A damaged Cyberman, which had its internal wiring hanging out, also sold for £4,080.
Fans hoping to buy one of two double-decker buses used in Doctor Who were left disappointed when they were both withdrawn from the sale.
But a London taxi used by Tate in The Runaway Bride episode in 2006 was sold for £1,920.
Full costumes, masks and props were very much in high demand and sold for thousands of £.
Stephen Gregory's black-and-white mask, as seen in the 1984 episode The Caves of Androzani, sold for £4,800. A God of Ragnarok costume went for £1,080, a bus conductor's head sold for £780, and the Kandyman costume for The Happiness Patrol episode of 1988 reached £1,920.
Sarah Sutton's Nyssa of Traken costume - a high-collar fitted velvet jacket and trousers - sold for £3,360 and a Marshman costume from two years earlier in 1980 reached £2,040.
A range of outfits worn by Tennant, Tate, Billie Piper, Noel Clarke, and Freema Agyeman sold for several hundred £each.
