[edit]

IT can be tricky for married couples to share each others' obsessions.

So when Neil Perryman, a lifelong Doctor Who fan, persuaded his wife, University of Sunderland media lecturer Sue Perryman, to watch every episode of the show, it could have ended in catastrophe.

Now, the couple's experiences have been put together in a book, Adventures With the Wife in Space: Living with Doctor Who, published by Faber and Faber today, to coincide with a month-long celebration of the show's 50th anniversary.

Mrs Perryman, of Hartlepool, said: "It was a bit of a marathon at times.

"I think Neil started to dread it more than me, after all, he knew what was coming."

The couple sat through 697 episodes over two-and-a-half years.

Mrs Perryman said: "My favourite Doctor was Patrick Troughton - or as I would call him, 'the scruffy drunk'.

A lot of his episodes were missing so we had to watch lots of reconstructions - which was a challenge.

"It was basically, lots of screen grabs with audio commentary."

Adventures With the Wife in Space: Living with Doctor Who costs £12.99.
