As Katherine Jenkins becomes the latest beauty to star in Doctor Who, Joni Alexander looks at some of the stunning companions who have appeared in the cult sci-fi drama over the years.
KAREN GILLAN, main, image, (AMY POND) Orphan Amy is the companion to the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith.
She is just nine when she first encounters the Time Lord, who reappears 12 years later and whisks the 19-year-old Kissogram girl off to the moon in his Tardis. Scottish Amy is the current Doctor Who companion.
BILLIE PIPER (ROSE TYLER) Billie Piper was already well-known as a former pop starlet and wife of celebrity DJ Chris Evans before she landed the part of Rose Tyler in 2004. Rose was companion to the ninth and 10th Doctors, as played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. She first appeared on our screens in 2005 as the working class shop assistant Rose.
KYLIE MINOGUE (ASTRID PETH) Australian songstress with a Welsh mum Kylie took a starring one-off role in the 2007 Christmas episode of Doctor Who. She played Astrid, a waitress on the starship Titanic who eventually sacrificed hereself to save David Tennant's Doctor.
MICHELLE RYAN (LADY CHRISTINA DE SOUZA) Former EastEnders actress and Bionic Woman Michelle, was a high-profile actress before landing the part of one-off companion Lady Christina. As a short-lived companion to David Tennant's Doctor she played a young aristocratic burglar in 2009. She filmed her episodes in Cardiff and Dubai.
FREEMA AGYEMAN (MARTHA JONES) Medical student Martha first appeared in Doctor Who in 2007. She eventually left when her unrequited love for David Tennant's Doctor became too much for her to bear. Martha also appeared in the Cardiffbased Torchwood.
SOPHIA MYLES (MADAME DE POMPADOUR) In 2006 Sophia appeared alongside 10th Doctor David Tennant as Madame de Pompadour in the Doctor Who episode The Girl in the Fireplace. Sophia is Reinette, the mistress of King Louis XV, who is stalked by a group of clockwork androids. The fireplace is a time window, allowing Doctor Who to appear at various stages of Reinette's life. Sophia - Lady Penelope in the 2004 Thunderbirds film - was David Tennant's real-life girlfriend from 2005-2007.
KATY MANNING (JO GRANT) From 1971-1973, Jo was the constant companion to Jon Pertwee. She worked for Unit, the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. The bubbly blonde andwasknownfor her willingness to take on action sequences and for her fashionable outfits.
JANET FIELDING (TEGAN JOVANKA) Adeparture from the usual British companions, Tegan was an Australian air stewardess who appeared from 1981-1984. She played alongside two Doctors: Tom Baker and Peter Davison. Actress Janet was indeed Australian, and later went on to work as a theatrical agent.
SARAH SUTTON (NYSSA) Originally from the planet Traken, Nyssa was companion to Doctor Who played by two actors, Tom Baker and Pete Davison. The aristocratic Nyssa appeared in 1981-1983 and is remembered for dropping her skirt in her final on-screen appearance in what she said was 'a parting gesture to the fans'.
SOPHIE ALDRED (ACE) Ace, also known as Dorothy, was The Doctor's assistant from 1987-1989. She was companion to the seventh Doctor played by Sylvester McCoy. Ace was a troubled teenager who was also an expert in explosives.
