ROYAL MARINES jack-stay giggling girls over a pathetic little pond. Parachute Regiment toughies propel giggling girls, well harnessed, into space. Britain's Olympian world role becomes keeping bored post-Christmas kids happy at Olympia. The "Mail's " School-boys and Girls Exhibition is back, a bit more desultory than last year, posing more sternly the inevitable question.: are there 'any traditional, pious, sporty " schoolboys" left ? For what is a schoolboy, when you, sift the "Mail's" proffered goodies ? A schoolboy needs Barclaycards, has a pop art picture of Al Capone over his bed, writes thank-you letters on " Passion Flower " psychedelic note-paper, passes his GCE " O " level with tapes from the Sleep Learning Association, produces 7s 6d for a "Top Executive " pen without tremors, wears " Slimline Wayfinders," the "really with it, terrific casual-style shoes with no laces to tie." A schoolboy buys his old mum "Budgie tonic tea cakes" to show his love. A schoolboy (those under 10 at least, judging by yesterday's crowds) is wild about Swinging Radio One and its gurgling disc jockeys. A schoolboy couldn't care less about monsters : the BBC "Dr Who" ones, provided live at Olympia, are treated with open derision. One lad asked a Cyberman for his autograph yesterday ; another braved the fun-furred Abominable Snowman's den and drew a terse " Clear off can't you" from the irate Yeti with a public school accent. In short, there aren't any true schoolboys now, just mini-adults.
