This winter, science fiction fans from near and far flocked to MSOE to see an exhibition related to Doctor Who. The worldwide cultural phenomenon of Doctor Who began in 1963 as a science fiction television series that originally aired on the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC). When it left the air in 1989, it was the world's longest running sci-fi show and today it lives on in books, magazines, films, conventions and Web sites.
Highlights of the MSOE exhibit included two original costumes worn in TV episodes, a rare first comic book to feature the Doctor, and even the only Doctor Who item to appear in a Star Wars film.
"Many of our students originally gained an interest in engineering through exposure to science fiction TV programs like Star Trek and Doctor Who," said Nick Seidler, assistant director of student activities, exhibit coordinator and Doctor Who authority. In fact, MSOE's science fiction and gaming student organization, MAGE, has gathered since the late 1980s to watch or discuss the merits of Doctor Who. A tradition they continue every Wednesday evening.
