Doctor Who Books
2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who and there have been many books to celebrate the show.
One of the best is Doctor Who: The Vault by Marcus Hearn.
Hearn takes us through the history of the show year by year.
There are many illustrations throughout of a variety of items - from original publicity stills to pictures of props, toys and costume designs, accompanied by informed text about the show.
James Goss and Steve Tribe take a slightly different approach in their book The Doctor: his lives and times.
They tell the story of Doctor Who by looking at each Doctor, with pieces written by characters from the show and essays by people who have been involved in the programme, such as Neil Gaiman's about the Patrick Troughton story, Tomb of the Cybermen.
Two of the most important actors in the history of Doctor Who are William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton.
Hartnell because he was the original and, if he wasn't a success, there wouldn't be a programme today.
Troughton because he was the first to follow Hartnell, if the viewers couldn't believe that he was The Doctor, again the programme wouldn't have continued.
The first of these biographies is Who's There? by Jessica Carney about her grandfather, William Hartnell, which is back in print and has been updated and sheds some light on the actor who played the first Doctor.
If you enjoyed Mark Gatiss's TV docudrama An Adventure In Time And Space, you may recognise some scenes from the book.
The biography of Patrick Troughton: The Second Doctor Who, was written by his son Michael.
Both actors were renowned character actors and both books reveal the men behind the Doctor.
If you enjoy an audio drama, Big Finish have celebrated in style with a special called The Light At The End featuring Doctors No.4 through to No.8 (Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann) and companions aplenty.
A fine selection for a remarkable achievement. Simon Lloyd, Waterstones, Falkirk
