Current production: Thank You All Very Much (Columbia)

Forthcoming production: Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin In the Bronx (U-M)

Waris Hussein has the distinction of being the world's first Indian-born director of an English-speaking film, Thank You All Very Much. (Satyajit Ray has not yet directed films with English dialogue.) The 30-year-old Hussein joined the British Broadcasting Corporation as a trainee director. For the BBC he started two successful series, "Dr. Who" and "The Newcomers," and he has since directed for two of the company's established programs, "Play of the Month" and "The Wednesday Play." It was his television credits that led producer Max Rosenberg to give Hussein the direction job on Thank You All Very Much.

Hussein feels that his Indian background is a positive help in providing an artistic commentary on English life because being an outsider lends him objectivity. As the son of the Indian Supply Commissioner working in England, he was educated at an English public school, Clifton College, Bristol, and studied English at Cambridge. While at Cambridge he directed Margaret Drabble (later the author of Thank You All Very Much) in a student production of "Twelfth Night." Hussein, is currently directing in Dublin a comedy starring Gene Wilder, the intriguingly entitled Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx.
