HE might claim to be from Gallifrey, but after a decade of filming in Wales we know where Doctor Who is really from... Cardiff.

And now the 900-or-so-year-old time traveller is set to get to know his fellow citizens of Wales' capital a bit better.

BBC Wales executives have arranged for the 12th doctor Peter Capaldi and his co-star Jenna Coleman, who plays his onscreen companion Clara, to meet the public before the premiere of the new series at St David's Hall.

Brian Minchin, Doctor Who executive producer, said: "After seven months of filming the moment has finally arrived when we get to introduce Peter Capaldi to the world.

"And where better to start but Cardiff, the home of Doctor Who."

Fans will get a chance to mingle with The Thick Of It star Capaldi as he walks up the red carpet outside Cardiff Central Library before an event on August 7. Also on hand on The Hayes will be the Doctor's fearsome enemies the Cybermen and the Daleks.

The Doctor and his assistant will then attend the sell-out screening of the first episode of the new series at St David's Hall from 11am.

The episode, entitled Deep Breath, will not be screened on television until August 23.

In the first trailer for the upcoming series, the Doctor is seen talking about his "many mistakes" and that he must do "something about that".

BBC Wales Director Rhodri Talfan Davies said: "Doctor Who is getting even bigger and even better - and it's a real thrill that the show's fans here in Wales will be the very first to see the new Doctor at this very special premiere screening. "Doctor Who has been made in Wales for almost 10 years - and we're so proud of its worldwide success."

Doctor Who first landed in Wales in 2004 when BBC Wales started filming the first series of the relaunched Doctor with Christopher Eccleston, before it was first aired on television early in 2005.

The new series will be the eighth of the modern Doctor Who and the first with Capaldi in the title role.

Over the past decade film crews shooting episodes of the sci-fi hit have become a common sight across South Wales, from beauty spot beaches to central Cardiff streets.

Cardiff's Queen Street will again have a starring role in the new series, and the stars have also been spotted filming in Llanelli and Barry Island.
