One of the most chillingly monsters of all time? Or just "a cone with lumpy bits and a sink plunger at the front"? For me, Lord Snowdon's photograph of a Dalek on this week's cover brings back the excitement of Saturday teatimes spent half-hidden behind the sofa willing the Doctor to escape extermination by his tinny enemies yet again.

For Colin Baker, the sixth to play the Time Lord, it's a reminder of a part of his career spent acting with a giant cone, as he recalls in BBC2's Doctor Who Night on Saturday. It's a must-see for every fan, including all those readers who voted the debut of the Daleks one of TV's greatest moments in our poll earlier this year and those who write asking us (a) when the BBC will show repeats, and (b) whether there are any plans to make a new series/film. The answers are on page 27.
