Bride-to-be Sarah Ferguson has one of the nation's best known monsters Just eating out of her hand.

The Dr Who Dalek rubbed shoulders with Britain's future princess at Christie's auction rooms last night and was almost last for words.

Immediately after, he was sold for £4,200 to 11-year-old William Brooks, grandson of Mr Bill Brooks, chairman of Christies.

Miss Ferguson had told the Dalek: "I hope you are going to raise lots of money".

Quite overcome. It could only splutter in reply: "I hepe so".

A host of celebrities and stars had given a total of 200 items for the charity auction after an appeal launched jointly by the BBC Women's Hour programme and the Red Cross to raise money for the Sudan. The auction brought in more than £30,000.

Royal protocol prevented Sarah signing a programme which organisers hoped would have become a star lot.
