Bids rocket for Dr Who books as fans try to Net their prize
WHEN Jeremy Wright wanted to "exterminate" his Doctor Who collection, he never expected to receive £155. The 35-year-old Blackpool man was the proud owner of a couple of rare 1970s Doctor Who annuals - one which he had kept since childhood.
But after surfing the Internet, he wondered how much he could get for the pair and put them up for sale.
Stunned
Jeremy, of St Albans Road, placed an advertisement on online auction site e-Bay for just £12 for both - and was stunned when a bidding war pushed the figure beyond three figures.
Jeremy, an artist at the Gazette, said: "My mum bought me one of the annuals when I was a kid and the other one I bought at a car boot sale 10 years ago for 20p.
"I was on e-Bay and just out of interest, I typed in 'Doctor Who'. There was one guy who was selling the annual I had for £25. So I decided to put them both on at £12 and try to generate some interest"
Jeremy, who had been a big fan of the cult show as a youngster, saw the price rise as fans tried to out bid each other to get their hands on the prize.
"In my heart of hearts," he added. "I was hoping for about £50 so I was stunned when it got £155. I couldn't believe it."
A mystery collector from Southport will take receipt of the annuals next week. Jeremy is now busy looking at his collection to see if there is anything else he can auction.
He added: "I've got a copy of the Daily Mirror from 1912. I'm definitely going to do it again."
