TV'S Jodie Whittaker made history yesterday when she was named as the first female to play the lead in Doctor Who.

The Broadchurch star, 35, is replacing Peter Capaldi, 59, right, and will be the 13th Doctor since the BBC1 show started 54 years ago. The news, which Jodie had kept secret for over a month, ended intense speculation and surprised many fans.

The actress urged them "not to be scared" of her gender and declared: "I'm beyond excited."
