Doctor Who: the Wilderness Years
4.30pm Radio 4
In the years between 1989 and 2005, Doctor Who disappeared completely from the schedules. But nothing so beloved ever really dies, so in the absence of more primetime adventures, the Doctor kept popping up in books, computer games, even theatre — not forgetting the 1996 TV movie starring Paul McGann, the Doctor with the shortest tenure at just 90 minutes (above). Talking to writers, fans and various keepers of the flame, presenter Matthew Sweet looks back at one of the strangest and most inventive periods in the show's 60-year history. Frankly, it's hard to imagine another "wilderness" period quite so creatively fertile.
