NOV. 23 BBC AMERICA

As part of Doctor Who's 50th-anniversary celebrations, BBC America is airing a movie about the creation of the show, An Adventure in Space and Time, and a special anniversary episode. We talked to executive producer Steven Moffat about the upcoming Who-palooza.

An Adventure in Space and Time stars David Bradley as the "First Doctor," William Hartnell. What can you tell us about that?

STEVEN MOFFAT

It's the story of this unexpected Indian summer William Hartnell had at the end of his career. He thought he was all washed up, and suddenly he's this huge star, and he goes through the experience of that and the experience of leaving it. It's quite relevant to this time in Doctor Who. I bet [current Doctor] Matt Smith will cry when he watches it.

Of course, Smith recently announced he will leave Who after this year's special Christmas episode. How's the search for the "Twelfth Doctor" going?

It's just terrifying. I won't go into any details, but it does feel absolutely chilling. One false move and the show's over.

The Doctor Who 50th-anniversary episode stars Smith and his predecessor, David Tennant. How did the two actors get along?

They were quite apprehensive about working with each other, actually. But they got on pretty much instantly, and they are a very, very funny double act on screen.

The episode also stars John Hurt, who appeared at the end of the last season with a credit "introducing" him as "the Doctor." Tell us about this character.

Well, he's in it and he's playing the Doctor. We're not lying! He is another Doctor, of which you know nothing.

Will we see any other former Doctors on the show?

You'll have to watch, won't you? People say, "Are you going to do the 11 Doctors?" We can't do 11 Doctors! Three of them are dead! What we're not doing is the traditional massive reunion. It's a different kind of anniversary, and the spine of that is David and Matt.
