I must confess to wanting to be in your particular part of America. It sounds like a warm and thoughtful place, with a little bit of history that I can relate to and understand."
So wrote British actor John Levene of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in a recent letter from his home in Middlesex, England.
Levene played the role of Sgt. Benton in "Doctor Who," the popular British Broadcasting Company science fiction show, which can be seen every Saturday at 4 p.m. on the Mississippi Educational Television Network.
The letter was addressed to Nancy Mueller, who interviewed Levene for Fan Magazine.
Mueller and a small army of "Doctor Who" fans, scattered between Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, are trying to raise funds to bring Levene to the Coast for the CoastCon, a science fiction and fantasy convention to be held March 17-19 at the Coast Coliseum Convention Center in Biloxi.
"Right now we have plans for a bake sale Saturday in front of Spanish Trails Books," said Mueller, 36. "CoastCon has agreed to pay John Levine's air fare if I and other fans will raise his fee. He reduced his fee by half to come visit, but we need $1,000." The sale will be at 1006 Thorn, near McDonalds.
"Doctor Who," in its 25th year, is the longest-running science fiction television program in the world.
The star, of course, is the infamous 750-year-old Dr. Who, Time Lord from Gallifrey.
"He's a renegade," Mueller said. "He travels through time and space in a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space).
Levene played Sgt. Benton on the UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Task Force).
"He protected the earth, generally England, when aliens invaded; the aliens are always trying to take over the earth, for some reason or other."
Mueller hooked Levene's interest by sending him photographs of the area.
"It started out kind of as a joke between him and me," Mueller said. "I started out doing an interview for Fan Magazine. As the last question, I asked if he'd like to come to my house for a cup of tea. He said he would."
Mueller started watching "Doctor Who" while living in England. When she returned to the United States, she found a Companions of Dr. Who fan group on the Gulf Coast.
"The fans are really picky about the most amazing things," Mueller said. "I invite them to my house for tea, the youngest I know is 14 and the oldest is 63."
Anyone donating $15 or more to the fund will receive a ticket for an exclusive tea party with Levene, to be held March 16, 1989.
