'Doctor Who's Tardis came to Barking on Saturday so he could sign autographs and meet up to 150 Time Lord fans.

TV's long-running science fiction time traveller materialised at Barking Learning Centre in Town Square.

Colin Baker, the character's sixth incarnation after the Tardis first set off on its adventures in time and space in 1963, appeared with cast members past and present to sign autographs.

Baker played Doctor Who from 1984 to 1986 with a mass of curly hair and a lurid patchwork coat. He returned to the role for the 1993 Children in Need special, Dimensions in Time, and a series of audiobooks.

Saturday's landing was one of a series running in Barking organised by long-time Doctor Who fan, Derek Hambly.

He said: "I don't miss any episode, even now. Doctor Who fans are all ages - some are even in their seventies."

The 57-year-old ran a Doctor Who merchandise shop up until 10 years ago at Barking's Vicarage Field shopping centre called 10th Planet.

Other cast members who signed autographs on Saturday included Lisa Greenwood, the Sixth Doctor's companion Flip Jackson, and Emma Campbell-Jones, who played Doctor Kent in The Wedding of River Song and Cass in webcast The Night of the Doctor.

The Doctor's next landing at Barking Learning Centre is on May 3, in the incarnation of Sylvester McCoy, the Seventh Doctor, accompanied by his assistant Sophie Aldred (Ace), followed on May 31 by Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor.
