SO FAR: Time traveller Dr. Who has beaten all comers. But tonight (B.B.C.1; 5.15 he loses his last battle with his masters, the Time Lords. He is exiled back to earth, but is granted one last wish-the choice of a new face. NOW READ ON....
A NEW, swinging Dr. Who-played by comedian Jon Pertwee is to be introduced when the series returns to television next January.
Pertwee, aged 50, will be a modern Who - no frock coat and baggy trousers-and, above all, sophisticated. For the B.B.C. has discovered that it is not so much the children who switch on to Dr. Who-most of the 8 million viewers are adults.
So OUT go the child actors. the young space travellers.
And IN come two new partners-a middle-aged brigadier and slick-chick female scientist.
Producer Peter Bryant said: "The new stories will be more believable and realistic with a sort of Quatermass flavour."
Horrific
Daleks, yetis. cybermen and ice warriors will remain, although most of the action will be set in modern Britain. Explained the B.B.C.'s head of drama, Shawn Sutton : "The daleks marching down Piccadilly is much more horrifying than anything up in space. This is real science fiction."
Jon Pertwee, the radio star from "Waterlogged Spa" and the "Navy Lark," admitted last night: "It's years since I have seen Dr. Who. At this stage it is too early for me to say how I will play the part." He is the third Who since the programme started in 1963. Patrick Troughton, who has played the part for three years. said: "I think it is time to get away and play some other parts."
