[edit]

DOCTOR Who is returning to your TV screen — as a film star.

The BBC is developing a two-hour movie with Universal Television.

They have approved the story and Matthew Jacobs, whose credits include Young Indiana Jones, is expected to deliver the script in a few months. It is not known who will follow Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy in playing the cult timelord. No production details have been confirmed.

A spokesman for BBC Worldwide Television said yesterday: "The doctor is a unique star. We look forward to having the script approved and moving this project into production."

In February, film genius Steven Spielberg failed to persuade American TV bosses to relaunch the doctor with Monty Python star Eric Idle piloting the Tardis and Baywatch's Pamela Anderson as his assistant. The original series, which was axed in 1988 after 25 years because of poor ratings, attracted 110 million viewers in 70 countries.
