DEBBIE KNOX exposes her son to the terrors that once sent him scuttling for safety behind the settee... and has a great day out

LOOKING for a day trip or short break that rates ten out of ten with all members of the family? Then look no further than just across the border at the little town of Llangollen.

Though long renowned for its beautiful scenery and annual International Musical Eisteddfod, the town has over the last few years broadened its appeal with a number of excellent tourism attractions for all ages.

To the ever-popular trips on the Llangollen Steam Railway and tranquillity of horse-drawn canal boats, has been added the excitment of the official BBC Doctor Who Experience and several other attractions at the town's Lower Dee Exhibition Centre.

Now Travellers in Time Ltd who together with Llangollen's other main tourism operators to offer a multi-attraction package.

An all-inclusive ticket gives entrance to the Dr Who Experience, the International Model Railway World, the Museum of Inland Water ways and the Dapol Toy Factory at the Lower Dee Exhibition Centre, as well as a return ride on the steam railway, a trip on a horse-drawn boat on the Llangollen Canal and lunch at one of eight restaurants in the town.

Monsters

We started our day in the superb Dr to experience everything the cult Who exhibition that really is a chance BBC television programme had to offer. And you don't have to be a complete devotee of the series to enjoy it immensely.

In fact I got as much enjoyment out of seeing how the monsters - that a few years ago were guaranteed to send my son hiding behind the settee as soon as the familiar theme tune came on the telly were made. Pushing the buttons on the exhibits brings them to life and sends that shiver run down my spine ...

Displayed are many of the original props, costumes, artifacts and models from the longest running science fiction series, including a Dalek. Dr Who's car and many more that all add up to a fascinating exhibition.

From Dr Who we went into the Dapol Model Railway and Toy Factory, that is part of the same building, and not only saw for ourselves the scaled-down Dr Who toy figures and railway items being made and painted but were also given a comprehensive run-down on the whole process by very knowledgable staff.

Similarly fascinating is the International Model Railway World with its 80,000-plus items on display, many of which can be seen running on 23 railway layouts.

We prised ourselves away in time for a superb lunch at the nearby Sarah Ponsonby pub before strolling alongside the Dee to Llangollen Station for a steam train ride along the Dee Valley to Carrog and back.

Having chosen probably the hottest day of the year for our trip, we were quite pleased to round off our day with a horse-drawn boat trip along the canal, traditional, peaceful and cool.

A great day out and very good value at £16.75 for adults and £9.75 for children or £49 for a family ticket for two adults and two children.
