IT WAS Dr Who Day — and from around the world came calls demanding that the doctor should materialise on television again without delay.
The international day of action was organised by the fan clubs and magazines which follow his activities with near-religious devotion. Devotees, numbering up to 25,000 worldwide, were told to telephone the BBC up to 20 times each.
By lunchtime, however, only about 250 phone calls had been received, many from Australia and America. "That's not that significant in the scale of things," a Television Centre spokesman said bravely.
Dr Who, who is 27 years old this week has gathered a following, who meet in seminars and congresses to discuss everything from Dalek dynamics to Tardis technology. But recently the fans have become anxious that Dr Who's disappearance from the screen for almost a year is suspiciously long — even for a Time Lord.
The BBC will say nothing definitive about the series other than that Dr Who has been consigned to the new universe of independent production — as part of a plan to fulfil a government quota of a quarter of all programmes being made outside the BBC.
"We're taking great care in choosing the right company, because we want the programme to be fresh but not to lose its traditional strengths," the spokesman said. "We should make a choice in 1991."
