DOCTOR WHO
BBC One, 7pm
Here is some good news . .. followed by even better news. The good news is that Doctor Who is back and — yes! — it's as exhilarating as ever. Russell T. Davies's script is exciting and imaginative and very funny. The monsters are as scary as scary can be without sending kids into psychological meltdown. The special effects are sensational, and David Tennant's Doctor is so wacky and endearing that his performance is getting perilously close to definitive. But here's the even better news. The doctor's new companion (Freema Agyeman) takes over the role from Billie Piper and immediately makes it her own, imbuing it with strength and fun and warmth. It is such a good episode that I almost forgot to mention that the wonderful Anne Reid plays an evil old crone who does disgusting things with a straw. Lucky children. Lucky parents. See Caitlin Moran, page 4.
