THE BBC faced criticism last night after it showed a passenger jet being blown out of the sky in Doctor Who.

Viewers accused the BBC of insensitivity for showing the sequence just days after the Egyptian air tragedy, apparently caused by a terrorist bomb.

In the scene, the Doctor's assistant Clara, played by Jenna Coleman, is shown firing a missile at a plane.

The sequence first appeared in last week's episode The Zygon Invasion but was repeated in the recap sequence at the beginning of last night's episode.

One viewer tweeted: 'You'd have thought Doctor Who might have cut the bomb heading for the plane.'

Another fan tweeted: 'Should Doctor Who really be showing a passenger plan being blown out of the skies with debris on the ground this week?'

A BBC spokesman said: 'The episode was clearly signposted as science fiction set in a fantasy world and no one died in the scene.'
