[edit]

A PILE of ash was all that remained of robot dog K9 last night after a blaze wiped out the science fiction cast of Dr Who.

But K9 did not die in vain — other victims of the fire included the Timelord's mortal enemies, the Tardis, a Cyber-man and a Dalek.

Earthlings escaped as the Dr Who exhibition at Longleat House perished in the heat of battle.

They were safely evacuated as 35 firemen fought to save the show, including original, 23-year-old props from the TV show.

Last night the mystery remained: Did K9 self-destruct or were they all exterminated by a Dalek?

A Wiltshire fire officer blamed the Dalek. "The flames seemed to start from him," he said.

But a Longleat spokeswoman said: "A visitor noticed the buttons on K9 getting hot, then others saw smoke coming from him. The flames were over 6ft high. We managed to get all the visitors out but lost the entire display. It's very sad."
