[edit]

This delightful creature looks unnervingly like a reincarnation of flower-power pop singer Mama Cass, who was rather famous for being fat.

In fact it's comedian Alexei Sayle — rather notorious for being naughty with a one-man show festooned with four-letter words. He has cleaned up his act somewhat to appear in tonight's DOCTOR WHO (BBC1, 5.20).

Alexei joins Colin Baker as the redoubtable Doctor and Nicola Bryant as assistant Peri to play a crazy disc jockey of the future.

"I think Doctor Who is brilliant — I've always been a fan. I got the impression they were rather amazed I agreed to appear in it though I was a bit worried myself," says Alexei, 32.

"I thought they'd ask me to play a decaying cabbage or something. It was quite a relief to look fairly normal."
