IT'S official, Doctor Who star Matt Smith is a sex symbol - even if he does have to play second fiddle to his predecessor, David Tennant.

The 28-year-old English actor was flustered to find out this week that he had been named in the Top 10 list of sexiest "hunks" in science fiction by US cable TV channel SyFy.

Smith came in at No.10, behind Tennant at No.2, with Australian actor Hugh Jackman at No.1. Other names on the list included Ryan Reynolds and Aussie Chris Hemsworth.

Doctor Who cohorts Karen Gillan and Billie Piper were on the list of Top 10 sexiest sci-fi "babes", topped by Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar.

"Right. Wow. That's good," Smith said when told of his new status by The Courier-Mail. "It's very nice. I don't know quite how it happened. But it's very pleasant indeed.

"It's got nothing to do with me, it's The Doctor people find sexy, I figure."

Smith took over the role of The Doctor two years ago from Tennant. Asked to define sexy, he said: "For me, sexy is knowing what you want and having the courage and conviction to be yourself.

"And I think, more than anyone I've ever come across, The Doctor knows - well, I suppose he doesn't know who he is at all - but in many ways he has conviction. Also, knowing he's the cleverest man in the whole universe; that's got to count for something."

Smith revealed he is aiming to head to Australia in December, work schedules permitting, for a promotional visit. And if he bumps into Jackman while he's down here, he said he'll be gracious in being beaten by the Wolverine star in the sexy stakes.

"Ah well, that man can sing," Smith said.

"(Doctor Who co-star) Alex Kingston is actually quite good friends with Hugh - she always talks about what a lovely guy he is. So it's a pleasure to lose to Hugh Jackman.

"I can't really compete, can I?" he said.
