Although I have enjoyed many of Dr. Who's adventures and have always been interested in the true stories of the American West, I am not getting much pleasure from the Doctor's stay in Tombstone. This setting is supposed to be that toughest of Western towns, but it is all too evident that it is situated in the BBC studios and that Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson and Doc Holliday and the Clanton boys are no further west than W.12. Johnny Ringo (captioned by the BBC as the most dreaded killer in all the West) just isn't and even all the awe and veneration of Charlie the barman (David Graham) can't make Johnny anything but what he is—Laurence Payne in gunman's clobber. The same goes for Dr. Who (William Hartnell) and Steven (Peter Purves) and Dodo (Jackie Lane) who will get a load hurrah from me when they climb into the Tardis and out of that almost laughable dress.
I suppose you could say it is a daring experiment on the part of producer Innes Lloyd and director Rex Tucker to attempt to tell one of the best known characters that have been played by some of Hollywood's greatest actors. I think u was plain foolish.
Only David Graham made anything of a success of his part and Sheena Marsh is good as Doc Holliday's girl friend Kate. But here's wishing for that battle at the O.K. Corral to be over and for the Tardis to be up and away.
