THE SUN sent the Dr Who Tardis to Bournemouth so Tories, for whom the present is rather uncomfortable, could travel in time to happier days.
Most wanted to travel back to the glory days of Thatcher.
I went further back to the Forties and interviewed Sir Winston Churchill, gaining some useful advice from Britain's wartime leader for young William Hague.
Few Tories I consulted felt any confidence in the future, however. Few dared journey FORWARD in the Tardis.
But I gave it a try and I think this is what I found. I saw things falling
apart for this supposedly unbeatable New Labour Government much faster than anyone now believes likely. I saw the Liberal Democrats locked into a servile relationship with Tony Blair, with Paddy Ashdown panting at his feet in hopes of a change to Britain's voting system — a change which Blair keeps promising but never delivers. And I saw Britain looking again at the Conservative Party ready and willing to give Hague's fresh
leadership a fresh chance — and much earlier than (in the shadow of that disastrous 1997 election) now seems possible.
But were the Tories capable of putting their stupid Euro squabbles behind them and rising to that challenge?
At this point my vision clouded. I cannot say. Even The Sun's Tardis can run into a little fog here and there.
