Sun's old Dalek may have to fight Doctor Who once more

A DALEK pensioned off years ago to The Sun newsroom was last night poised to battle Doctor Who again — after an SOS from the BBC.

Producers of the hit sci-fi show issued a worldwide appeal to borrow back the flogged-off aliens because they do not have enough for a forthcoming series.

Recent episodes have seen armies of the Doctor's arch enemies created using special effects - but this time around up to 30 "real" Daleks are needed for an epic battle to exterminate latest Time Lord Matt Smith. Executive producer Caroline Skinner confirmed yesterday: "We're collecting every Dalek known to man. It's going to be great."

Among the retirees already recruited is one called Russell T Dalek - whose proud owner is the show's former supremo Russell T Davies.

Last night The Sun's was on standby to join them - after spending the past six years harmlessly confronting visitors to our Wapping HQ.

Our gold coloured Dalek last came face to face with the Doctor when he was played by Jon Pertwee.

That was way back in a 1972 adventure called Day Of The Daleks. We acquired him in 2004 amid fears the famous aliens would not be appearing when the BBC decided to resurrect Doctor Who after a nine-year gap. That was because of a row with the family of Dalek creator Terry Nation.

Our space monster showed his mettle by fronting The Sun's successful "Bring Back The Daleks" crusade - attacking BBC Television Centre and swooping on the film set in Cardiff.

Last night the latest Doctor Who supremo Steven Moffat said: "We'd like to assure The Sun we take very good care of all our Daleks and see no harm comes to them during production."

He added: "Except for the ones the Doctor blows up, of course."
