FOR Rob Baines, a young film maker, the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who represents not only a landmark in television history, but a chance to celebrate the show that inspired him to pick up a video camera and make his own short films.
Mr Baines, 20, from Darlington, was featured in The Northern Echo in 2010, when his father built him a replica Tardis, which he used to create his own Doctor Who fan fiction films for You Tube.
Three years on, he is studying TV and film production at Teesside University and is still coming up with his own Doctor Who-inspired films for his fans online.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Mr Baines has made plans to travel to Birmingham to meet a group of friends he has made through YouTube and watch The Day of The Doctor in the cinema.
He said: "I think the 50th anniversary is something that needs to be shared. It's an amazing show that really brings people together."
Mr Baines started watching the programme during the David Tennant era, but has since trawled through the archives to watch as many of his predecessors as possible.
The films he creates for YouTube feature his own version of the Doctor, played by himself, which take different elements of each incarnation of the Time Lord.
He writes, films and edits each clip and also creates many of the visual effects.
He said: "Doctor Who is probably the main reason I've gone into my course at Teesside University."
