It is with unexpected sadness that the Network announces the death of celebrated DOCTOR WHO actor Patrick Troughton. The veteran British actor was appearing at the Magnum Opus Sci-Fi Convention in Columbus. Georgia, when he died. Troughton, 67, was at the convention with Anthony Ainley, also of the DOCTOR WHO series, and other science fiction actors.
Stepping forth from the very first regeneration of Doctor Who, Troughton emerged from the TARDIS as a clowning and sly, Beatle-haired, flute playing, space-time wanderer. Best known in the United States as the second Doctor Who, Troughton had a prominent career spanning 40 years on the British stage, and in television and film. Troughton trained at the Embassy School of Acting under Eileen Thorndike and later joined the Bristol Old Vic Company. Before long, he was acting on London's West End and appearing in films. After a chameleon-like range of character portrayals for BBC-TV as Alan Breck in KIDNAPPED and the pawnbroker in DAVID COPPERFIELD. he took over for William Hartnell as DOCTOR WHO.
Troughton can be seen in the role of The Doctor on DOCTOR WHO episodes airing Sundays, May 24 and 31 at 12 noon.
