Shakespearian actor Patrick Troughton is to play Dr. Who

The BBC take pride in announcing that the former Shakespearian actor Patrick Troughton is to play Dr. Who when the children's serial returns in the autumn.
To my mind and this is no reflection on Mr. Troughton the serial should not make a return at all.
When it first came to the screen "Dr. Who", was an imaginative programme that held many adults as well as the young. But like so many other good programmes it was hammered to death.
The Daleks, such a hit in the beginning, have been brought back from time to time in an attempt to keep interest alive - and they will be with us. again when the programme returns.
Troughton takes over because the original "Dr. Who" William Hartnell, is returning to the stage. It's always difficult to replace a principal actor in a series like this, and I don't think the BBC should have tried.
The departure of Hartnell. would have been as good an excuse as any for killing a programme that was showing its age.
