Peter Capaldi, the Scottish actor best known for playing the sweary Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, is the new bookies' favourite to be the next Doctor Who. William Hill had not taken any money on him before Sunday but had to cut the odds to 2-1 yesterday after 40 bets were placed in 24 hours, an avalanche in such a small market.
Capaldi, 55, would be the second oldest actor to play the timelord, after William Hartnell, but it may count against him that he has already been in episodes of Doctor Who and its spin-off, Torchwood.
If they sign him, the BBC should replace Steven Moffat, whose scripts have become impenetrable, with Ian Martin, writer of most of Tucker's best lines. It's about time the Daleks got called a "f***ing omnishambles".
