Tardis is Grounded

LONDON: Television's time lord Dr Who has been grounded.

The BBC, which makes the popular series, says the cost is too high.

The corporation wants to use the money to make other programs.

It hopes to bring Dr Who back to the screen in about 18 months.

The decision is bound to upset Dr Who's 110 million viewers in 55 countries, including Australia.

It will be the first time in the program's 22-year history it has been missing for so long.

Fans of the doctor have launched a bid to reverse the decision which the program's official historian described as disgraceful.

Peter Haining, author of a book on the series, said: "Dr Who is unique. There will be a tremendous outcry to save it."

The axing of the famous time lord was ordered just four weeks before the next series, starring Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant, was due to go into production.

Baker, the sixth actor to play the lead role, said: "I am very disappointed about the decision, but I will strive to be available as long as there is another series to come."
