THE LAST SONTARAN

WRITER Phil Ford

DIRECTOR Joss Agnew

THE ONE WHERE Kaagh, the last survivor of the Sontaran fleet destroyed by the Doctor, plots to destroy Earth in revenge. His plan: using a radio telescope station to bring thousands of orbiting satellites crashing down onto nuclear power plants.

VERDICT Kicking off the new series with a direct sequel to a season four Doctor Who episode was a great idea, not just in terms of rewarding regular viewers, but also economics — you can reuse the suit and the FX! This is a simple, accessible opener with a little too much running around-the woods, but some great wisecracks for Clyde, some neat additions to the Sontarans and a welcome personality upgrade for Mr Smith. And Maria's decision to leave Bannerman Road behind for a new life in America is given just enough screen time, without overshadowing the narrative.

BEST BIT When Kaagh's helmet slides apart.

DID ANYONE ELSE THINK... when Professor Skinner started acting strangely, that he'd been replaced by one of the Sontarans' sworn enemies, the shapeshifting Rutans?

BEST LINE Clyde: "That guy has a bad case of little-man syndrome!"
