ACTOR Paul McGann is set to play the new Dr Who, resurrecting the sci-fi series seven years after it was exterminated by the BBC, writes Lisa O'Carroll.

The £5 million TV film is scheduled to go into production for Hollywood producers Universal in Vancouver within the next few weeks and will be screened on Fox Television.

It is thought McGann beat stiff competition for the role. A senior BBC source said: "Paul is good looking, but also in a way looks like an alien. He was always our first choice."

McGann, 36, will be the eighth Dr Who. He said: "Taking on such a key role hasn't really sunk in yet. It's just beginning to dawn on me what all this means.

"I loved Dr Who as a kid. My favourite villain was the Yeti, but the Daleks never did it for me — they couldn't run upstairs."
