Some Whovians — fans of Dr. Who on Channel 38 and around the world —are unhappy with the improved quality of the show and are petitioning for an American version of the BBC (British) sci-fi show.

Among them is Mike Ochs, senior public relations director for the Great Lakes Region of The American Who petition drive. Ochs, a Chicago native, is a freshman at St. Norbert College.

The old Dr. Who had lousy sets and terrible props. "Some of the monsters were just people in black garbage bags in shadows," Ochs said. "but that was the magic of it.

"Now they're using all the funding (about $2 million a year), and it's lacking imagination."

Ochs hopes the petition drive will influence the BBC to relinquish the rights for an American version that would be solely for home video release. It would be made in Chicago.

Ochs said two past Dr. Who's, Colin Baker and Terry Nation, are supporting the effort.

Interested Whovians can write The American Who, P.O. Box 4296, Hammond, Ind. 46324.

Dr. Who fans accounted for the second-highest pledge total during the recent, and sometimes irritating, Wisconsin Public TV fund drive.

Anne of Green Gables attracted 969 pledges and $55,985, and the Whovians were next with 258 pledges and $18,588.

The 16-day drive netted $234,475, including $22,000 froth the challenge fund. The network said it was its most successful drive.
