Doc has some old friends round to say a Christmas farewell
NOVEMBER 23rd should be renamed Doctor Who Day, in commemoration of the time when everyone went just a little bit Time Lord crazy. It was the day when fans gathered to celebrate the sci-fi adventure's 50th anniversary.
At the centre of it was a memorable episode in which Matt Smith was joined by David Tennant and John Hurt as other incarnations of the Doctor.
Most people loved the tale and were swept away by the sheer scale of it.
In fact, the furore surrounding the episode has only just died down, but already, we have another landmark episode to look forward to - the now customary Christmas Day edition.
This time, it will feature the last adventure for Smith before he regenerates into Peter Capaldi (the new Doctor, pictured inset right) in one of the most eagerly awaited Whovian moments for many a year.
"I'm going to miss it terribly," says Smith, who had the daunting task of stepping into the shoes of Tennant - who has just been voted the best Doctor ever, eclipsing even perennial favourite Tom Baker.
But he quickly made the role his own, so you may wonder why he's going.
Well, he hasn't offered a big explanation for his decision, but like many actors, he perhaps feels the need to push himself by tackling other roles.
He's certainly landed a couple of juicy ones since quitting - he stars in Ryan Gosling's directorial debut How to Catch a Monster, and is currently appearing in a West End musical version of American Psycho.
Thankfully, Moffat seems to have lived up to his promise to deliver a fittingly dramatic farewell to Matt.
On Christmas Day we'll witness the universe's deadliest species gathering at a far-off planet, summoned by a mysterious message that also reaches the Doctor.
He whips Clara away from her festive meal to help him investigate - but what they discover alters the gallivanting Gallifreyan's destiny forever.
"I'm really excited about Christmas," says Matt. "I think Steven has written a real belter for me to go out on and I had a great time filming it.
"It was quite sad at the end, obviously, when I had to leave, but I think we've got a really moving story, with a really great sense of adventure in it. But it still feels like a classic adventure episode with great monsters and a few twists."
