10m SEE DOCTOR BEAT ANT 'N DEC

DR WHO's triumphant return pulled in 10.6million viewers — exterminating Saturday night rivals Ant and Dec.

BBC1 chiefs celebrated as the Time Lord showed he is still the daddy of sci-fi heroes after an absence of 16 years.

The show won a massive 44.3 per cent of viewers. Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway managed only 7.2million viewers (34.1 per cent) — even with David Beckham as a guest.

The Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, saved Earth from killer plastic shop dummies, helped by sidekick Rose (Billie Piper), above. Sylvester McCoy, who played the Doctor from 1987 to 1989, described Eccleston's performance as "wonderful". He added: "It had great pace and was witty. I was captivated by both the new Doctor and his assistant Rose."

Sun readers also praised the new series, written by Queer As Folk creator Russell T Davies.

Simon Patterson, of Lichfield, Staffs, said: "I thought it would look dated, but it's better than I remember. Long live the Doctor!"

It was the second highest launch show for a Doctor Who — 10.8 million watched Tom Baker regenerated as the Time Lord in 1974.

An average of just 4.2mil lion watched the last series in 1989. It was the reason the programme was axed.
