DR WHO is back on the telly tonight, and it's about time. Well obviously it's about time - what I mean is, it's about time. They should never have axed it in the first place.

The question is, will it be any good? As the new scriptwriter Russell T Davies is a mate, I hope so, and I canvassed critics who've had a sneak preview of episode one to get their verdicts.

The good news is it's thumbs up all the way. Christopher Eccleston as the new Time Lord and Billie Piper as his sexy sidekick are a dream combo, apparently. And one of the key ingredients that made the early series of Dr Who such a hit - the fear factor - is high up in the mix; there are plenty of hide-behind-the-sofa moments.

Most Brits who can remember exactly what they were doing the day President Kennedy was assassinated also have crystal-clear recall of the first episode of Dr Who, which went out two days after the Dallas shooting.

I remember sitting with my sister in front of our coal fire, transfixed by our TV's flickering images of William Hartnell - the first Doctor - flying his Tardis through space and time.

It was all anyone could talk about at school the following Monday, and was such a sensation that the BBC repeated the first episode the following week. Eccleston and Piper have a lot to live up to - but from the clips I've seen, tonight we'll be going back to the future with a bang.
