Gaiman and Higson to pen introductions for Doctor Who backlist revamp

Doctor Who will be travelling through time again this year, with BBC Books playing the role of assistant, as the company starts to bring the classic Doctor Who novels back into print.

BBC Books will publish the first six of the 156 Doctor Who novels on 7th July as £4.99 paperbacks. The first six titles are: Doctor Who and the Daleks, and Doctor Who and the Crusaders, both by David Whitaker, the first story editor for "Doctor Who", depicting the doctor as he was played by William Hartnell; Doctor Who and the Cybermen by Gerry Davis and Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowmen by Terrance Dicks, both following the doctor at the point he was played by Patrick Troughton; and Doctor Who and the Auton Invasion by Terence Dicks and Doctor Who and the Cave Monster by Malcolm Hulke, depicting the doctor as played by Jon Pertwee. Each of the titles will be presented with new introductions, written by authors and fans such as Neil Caiman and Charlie Higson.

In addition to the introductions, there will be a "The Changing Face of Doctor Who" section, giving detailed descriptions of the Doctor and his companions for that adventure. A "Note on the Text" at the back will cover historical context, and the book's own publication history, showing how it relates to the show on which it is based.

The new covers feature art work by UK-based artist Chris Achiellos, who illustrated more than 30 covers for the series when it was originally published.

BBC Books editorial director Albert De Petrillo said: "There's such a tremendous nostalgic fondness for these books." He described using Achiellos' artwork as a way of "retaining that original connection to the book", with the publisher adding golden foil on the logo to bring it "that bit more up to date".

BBC Books is also publishing The Dalek Handbook on 12th May as a £9.99 hardback, illustrated with artwork and photographs. De Petrillo said the book would offer a "full history of the doctor's deadliest enemies."
