BBC television's drama group is offering a total of 637 productions in the coming months. Mr. Shaun Sutton, BBC's head of drama, said last week that from mid-November practically all these productions would be in Colour, while from early 1970, they would all be.

The output will be shared by the three divisions of the drama group, plays. series and serials On BBC-1, there will be new Wednesday Plays, which he promises "will be as robust, as controversial, as up-to-date as before," new Plays of the Month and a long run of Thirty Minute Theatre.

Long running series like Softly, Softly, The Troubleshooter and Dr Finlay's Casebook will continue, as will serials like Z Cars and Dr Who.

On BBC-I there will bra new series of plays in colour. Take Three Girls, twelve plays made up of three quartets about three girls who happen to share the same flat, written by Hugo Charteris, Julia Jones and Charlotte Bingham. and Terence Brady.

Other BBC-1 plays will be Three Sisters, by Chekhov. starring Janet Summit. Eileen Atkins, Michele Dotrice, Michael Bryant, Ronald Hines and Joss Ackland. and Good King Charles Golden Days. by Bernard Shaw, starring John Giel god, Athene Sayler, Joan Greenwood, Joyce Redman, Barbara Jefford, Elizabeth Bergner, Maurice Denham, Michael Craig, Derek Godfrey and Corin Redgrave.

There is also Charley's Aunt, by Brandon Thomas. starring Danny La Rue, Coral Browne. Ronnie Barker, Robert Coote, Dinsdale Landen and John Standing.

Plays on BBC-2 will include The Six Wives of Henry VIII, six full-length plays, starring Keith Michell as Henry, Annette Crosbie as Catherine of Aragon. Dorothy Tutin as Anne Boleyn. Anne Stallvbrass as Jane Seymour, Elvi Hale as Anne of Cleves. Angela Pleasance as Catherine Howard and Rosalie Crutchley as Catherine Parr.

New series

Among new series are Paul Temple, the detective created by Francis Durbridge, who comes to television for the first time with Francis Matthews in the title role and Ros Drinkwater as Steve. A new spy series, Codename, set against the background of University life in Cambridge, begins in 1970, and another series called Dooomwatch. On BBC-2, The Borderers the series about the English-Scottish border in the 16th century.

A new serial on BBC-2 is The Doctors, which comes twice-weekly, about a moderm group practice in a cosmopolitan area of North London. There is also Pegasus, a four-part story of the further of adventures of two naval foes of Napoleon's time, first seen in the serial Triton.

The run of classic serials on BBC-2 continues. After The First Churchills, the new season will include The Spoils of Poynton, by Henry James, Germinal by Emile Zola, Daniel Deronda by George Eliot, Villette by Charlotte Bronte and The Woodlanders by Thomas Hardy.

There will also be Sentimental Education by Gustave Flaubert and The Roads to Freedom by Jean-Paul Sartre.
