The B.B.C. is to start a big drive for audiences in the New Year with TV cliffhangers.

A new twice-weekly serial is planned to combat ITV's top-rated "Coronation Street" and Compact" may be returned to its old peak viewing time of 7.30 p.m.

Mr. Donald Wilson, new head of TV serials, said last night: "I'd like to see 'Compact' back in its old slot—although we haven't lost as many viewers as we feared by screening it earlier."

A new children's science fiction serial. "Dr. Who,' starts next week and will run right through next year, Top writers are being signed to script thriller serials for the B.B.C.'s second TV channel which opens in April. They include Victor Canning, Ken Hughes, Nigel Balchin, and Nigel Kneale.

Mr. Wilson added: "Viewers seem to like serials—and so do my bosses."
