KCOS Channel 13, El Paso's public television station, has been deluged with telephone calls in the past three weeks complaining that "Dr. Who" has been taken off the air in some communities in southern New Mexico.
Promotions director Lisa Lem said it's not just "Dr. Who" that is gone.
Las Cruces TV Cable Company cut air time for KCOS in early March. It is broadcast from 6:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 6:45 to 9 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Programming from the Las Cruces public television station, KRWG, is picked up after those hours to complete the viewing day for New Mexico subscribers. The New Mexico company serves Las Cruces, Dona Ana, Mesilla and Mesilla Park.
Debbie Tempel, marketing manager for Las Cruces cable, said a November survey of its customers revealed they had little interest in the El Paso PBS station. Since the change took place, however, the cable company also has received numerous complaints about the programming cut.
Depending on developments and increased professed customer interest in KCOS, Temple said, the station could be picked up again in the future. No changes are expected for the next six months, though. Meanwhile, although programming from KRWG-Channel 22 is aired instead, it does not carry the popular series, "Dr. Who."
